Cockatiel Dangers Continued![]() General Household SafetyHouseplants -Some house plants can be deadly if nibbled or ingested, Unless you know the plant is safe, don't let your bird near it. Many of the exotic tropical flowers, such as plumeria is toxic.A cockatiel's natural habitat is Australia, but don't assume that all australian plants are safe. I can tell you from experience that citrus trees are safe, as are mazanita. Cherry is poisonous. Furniture- If your bird has free flight, or simply gets set onto furniture such as a dresser, bureau, desks etc, there is still danger to watch for. Cockatiels like to peck and chew. They can quickly chew the corner of your antique desk to a royal mess. You may have wood toys in the bird's cage and figure, it won't hurt him if he eats a small section, you are wrong... that desk will have been stained, varnished, waxed and all three are harmful to your bird. Then there is the added danger of your bird falling behind the furniture and getting stuck. A cockatiel will struggle, twist and turn in panic and those actions will most likely worsen the situation. If the cockatiel cannot expend it's breast to breathe, your bird will suffocate and you probably won't know until you notice the bird missing and search. Promptness is very important in this situation. If you know the bird is in the room, out of sight, look behind the furniture before looking under. Windows- You may think that as you have closed all your windows, your bird is safe... think again... A Cockatiel is one the strongest flying birds in the parrot family (despite their size). They don't know that a window is glass, all they see is the great empty sky and space. If they are spooked, they will fly hard, even if wings have been trimmed, and they could slam into the closed window and do serious harm to themselves. They could break or crack their beak. This is an emergency! Your bird uses it's beak to eat and climb and will need to be seen by an avian vet right away! Mirrors pose the same dangers as windows, in that they can slam into them and get injured. Cockatiels (or any bird for that matter) needs to be supervised when out of the cage Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 Warning: Division by zero in /home/simplyco/public_html/admin/inc/functions.inc.php on line 528 |
